Toponymy of the Quechua YUNGAY

 

The 04 of August of 1540, Fray Domingo of Santo Tomas founded the City and the Convent of Yungay, Peru. In his evangelization task, the mentioned friar, learned to speak "runa simi" to which he called "QUICHUA" in his publication in 1560 of the first linguistic study of the Inca's language of the Tawantinsuyo.

According to Anthropologist Alfredo Torero, the QUECHUA in their form YUNGAY but was extended at times pre-Incas, by, that we presented/displayed to You some even existing toponímicos of the Quechua de Yungay after almost 5 centuries:

 

YUNGAY: Warm Valley comes from quechua YUNGA =, but the adjective "Y"que gives the qualification him of" on "; due to which YUNGAY means "warm Valley on, that is the tempered Valley". Yungay in Peru is the name of the city that already existed before the arrival of the Spaniards, but "was founded" the 04 of August of 1,540. Also it gives his name to the City of Yungay in Chile in memory of the victory of United restaurador army Peruvian – Chilean. in 1,839.

HUASCARAN: = comes from quechua HUASCA= chain and RAN = rocky stones or mountains; due to which Huascarán means "Mountain range". The Huascarán is a snow-covered mountain of 6.768 mals. and this located in the Province of Yungay, Peru.

SHAPRARAJU: = comes from quechua SHAPRA Beard and RAJU = ice, snow-covered mountain; due to which Shapraraju "snow-covered Mountain bearded". The Shapraraju (badly Chacraraju call) is a snow-covered mountain of 6.112 mals. and this located in the Province of Yungay, Peru.

YANAPACCHA: It comes from Black quechua YANA, and PACCHA = Cataract; due to which YANAPACCHA means "black hill Cataract". The Yanapaccha is a snow-covered mountain of 5.460 mals. and this located in the Province of Yungay, Peru.

PISCO: = comes from quechua PISHQO Or PISQO the bird. The PISCO is a snow-covered mountain of 5.752 mals. and this located in the Province of Yungay, Peru. Also it gives his name to the Town of Pisco in Peru and to the called brandy of grape Pisco, produced originally in this town.

CHOPICALQUI: = comes from quechua CHOPI Center and CALQUI = That fits; due to which CHOPICALQUI means "That it fits to the center". The Chopicalqui is a snow-covered mountain of 6.307 mals. and this located between the snow-covered mountains Huascarán and Contrahierba, in the Province of Yungay, Peru.

TULLPARAJU: = comes from quechua TULLPA stone furnace and Raju = Ice, snow-covered mountain; due to which TULLPARAJU means "Mountain snow-covered in furnace form". The known Tullparaju but as HUANDOY is a snow-covered mountain of four peaks, one of them of 6.395 mals. and this located to the north of the snow-covered mount Huascarán, in the Provinces of Yungay and Huaylas, Peru.

ORKO COCHA: It comes from Male quechua ORKO = and COCHA = Lagoon; due to which ORKO COCHA means "Male Lagoon". The Orko Cocha is the second lagoon of Llanganuco (3.825 mals), located to the east of first; it is located between the snow-covered mountains Huascarán and Huandoy, in the Province of Yungay, Peru.

WARMI COCHA: = comes from quechua WARMI Female and COCHA = Lagoon; due to which WARMI COCHA means "Lagoon female". Warmi Cocha (Badly Chinan call cocha) is the first lagoon of Llanganuco (3.820 mals), located to the west of second; it is located between the snow-covered mountains Huascarán and Huandoy, in the Province of Yungay, Peru.

WAMANCALLAN: Hawk or sparrowhawk comes from quechua WAMAN = and SHUT UP = what exists; due to which WAMANCALLAN means "Where the hawks or sparrowhawks live or they are hawks". Wamancallan is the name of the imposing hill located to the north of the city of Yungay, Peru '; in whose summit ciudadela exists one pre-Inca.

RANRAHIRCA: It comes from stony, rocky quechua RANRA  and HIRCA = HILL; due to which RANRAHIRCA means "stony hill". Ranrahirca is the name of a District of the Province of Yungay, Peru.

 QUILLO: comes from the Quechua Quilla = Moon. QUILLO is the name of a District of the Province of Yungay, Peru.

QUILLA RUMI: = comes from the Quechua Quiila=Moon, RUMI = stone. Keel rumi is the name of the "stone of the moon" that is located near the summit of a hill, upon the ruins of Kotosh in Huanuco, Peru.

QANCHISCOCHA: Proviene of the Quechua QANCHIS=Siete and COCHA=laguna. Qanchiscocha is a lagoon that is in the black mountain range in the Province of Yungay, Peru.

MUSHO: = comes from New Quechua MUSHOC. Musho is the name of a smaller town of the Province of Yungay, Peru.

HUARASCUCHO: It comes from the Quechua WARAS = trousers and CUCHO=Rincón, reason by which HUARASCUCHO means "Corner of the trousers". Huarascucho is a smaller town of the Province of Yungay, Peru.

HUANTUCAN: It comes from the Quechua WANTU=cargar and Qan= you, reason by which HUANTUCAN means "loads to You in bunk". Huantucan is a smaller town of the Province of Yungay, Peru.

YANAHUARA: It comes from black Quechua YANA = and WARA= trouser, reason by which YANAHUARA means "black Trouser". Yanahuara is a district of the Province of Arequipa, Peru.

YANAMAYO: = comes from the Quechua YANA=negro and MAYU = River, that is YANAMAYO means "black River". Yanamayo is a town of the Department of Puno, Peru.

ACONCAGUA: = comes from Quechua AKUN or AKO sand, HAKU = Vamos and QHAWAQ = to watch, that is ACONCAGUA means "Viewpoint or sand sentry" or also "we are going to watch" or "viewpoint". The Aconcagua (Argentina) and the Huascaran (Peru) are the mountains of greater altitude in America.

ALPAMAYO: = comes from quechua ALLPA=soil and MAY = River; due to which Alpamayo means "Located between the soiland river". The Alpamayo is a beautiful snow-covered mountain of 5.947 mals and this located in the Province of Huaylas, Peru, neighbor of the Province of Yungay.

CACHIMAYO: = comes from Quechua CACHI salt and MAYO=river, that is Cachimayo means "river salty". Cachimayo, is city of the Department of Cusco, Peru.

CHALACO: = comes from the voice quechua CHALA Coast. It is known like Chalacos the inhabitants of the coast of the Callao, Peru.

PUCALLPA: It comes from Quechua PUCA = red and ALLPA= soil, that is PUCALLPA means "red soil". Pucallpa, is the capital of the Department of Ucayali, Peru.

PACHACAMAC: It comes from the Quechua PACHA=Mundo CAMAC = comes, PACHACAMAC, means "God comes to the world". Pachacamac, is a district of Lima, Peru, where was one of the religious but important centers of the Incas)

POMABAMBA: It comes from the Quechua POMA=puma and BAMBA=territorio, that is POMABAMBA means "the territory of pumas". Pomabamba is a province of Ancash in the Peru.

PISCOBAMBA: It comes from the Quechua PISHQO = bird and BAMBA=land ot territory, that is PISCOBAMBA means "the territory of the birs". Piscobamba is a province of Ancash in the Peru.

YANAMA: = comes from Quechua YANA Black Color and MAN = to direct it towards the place, reason by which YANAMAN means "to go towards the place of black color", or "on the black color". YANAMA is the name of a District of the Province of Yungay, Peru.
