HISTORY OF
YUNGAY PROVINCE

1,464 to 1,532: In 68 years, the territories of Yungay were absorbed by the expansion of the INCA EMPIRE  , under the conduction of the Incas Pachacutec, Tupac Yupanqui and Huayna Cápac . In this period, the incan influence in the technical, social and cultural aspects was intense in all of the Huaylas Valley. The Inca Huayna Cápac sealed to the union of the Huaylas region with the Inca Empire  when marrying to the daughter of the Cacique of Huaylas called, Contarhuacho , who had a daughter , the same that being sister of the Atahualpa Inca, at the end of November of 1532 became the wife of Don Francisco Pizarro . Previous to the marriage, the princess was baptized with the name of Ines Huaylas Yupanqui. In that time Incas already glimpsed the strategic position of this territory because in Yungay the ways were crossed for communicated with Cajamarca to the North, Pachacamac (Lima) to the South, Valley of Conchucos and Huanuco to the East and Casma to the West.

It is possible that before the arrival of the Incas, these land already had the name of
YUNGAY, the one that YUNGA comes from the voice quechua  with meaning "warm Valley", but the letter Y that added to an adjective means "on". It is to say to the old inhabitants pre-Incas realized of which this land was not exactly a zone yunga because the climate was tempered, own of zones limit superior to the Yunga region, is for that reason they baptized it like YUNGAY that means "Valley upon the warm place" or "tempered climate Valley" .

The name of Imigay appears a single time in history, apparently because days before (17 of January of 1533) the chronieler had been in a warm place called
Imiga (present Yuracmarca) and when arriving at place between warm and cold ,He added the letter "Y" , which means “The head of imiga”

The importance of the city of Yungay, in the beginnings of the colony is reflected when “
by order of the Viceroy Toledo (1571), the first reductions settled down (Concentration of populations) that were in the Department of Ancash, with Huaraz at the top of the Hanan Huaylas and Yungay at the top of the Hurin Huaylas... “, under the supervision of the Commissioner of the Virrey Don Alonso of Santiago of Valverde
