YUNGAY :
EARTHQUAKE AVALANCHE OF THE 31.05.1970 |
 |
 |
|
The Yungainos ancestral saw often bloom, disappear and
reconstruct their cities, from their appearance in the Cave
of the Guitarrero 10.600 BC. The Earth fertility, the
benevolent climate and the natural beauty of the territory
caused that their inhabitants faced earthquakes and
avalanches that time and time again destroyed the towns of
the province, but the Yungainos always was there,
challenging before the natural, proud disasters by to have
been born in this one fertile and beautiful earth,
reconstructing their cities with the high forehead always
watching snow-covered mounts his to eter companions to us.
They are dumb witnesses of which it was YUNGAY IN The past ,
the vestiges of towns in Queushu (Huarca), Marccayoc,
Huansakay, Humancayan, Etzahuain, Ojotunan, Uchuscoto, Old
Jato, Kisuar, ColloJirca and others (all with greater
antiquity of 1.500 years)
The city of Yungay does not exist historical data about
whichever times was destroyed by avalanches in the past
pre-Hispanic but important vestiges of old destroyed towns
exist and/or buried, it is for that reason that wise person
Antonio Raimondi, writes: Yungay, has been founded on the
ruins of another old town, being observed important rest of
construction, previous to conquista(española), in the called
cerrito Huansakay, located near panteón.
The history of the province of Yungay registers single facts
happened after the arrival of the Spaniards in 1533, being
the most painful following avalanches:
"06 of January of 1725: Violent earthquake which it
produced the snow sliding from Monte Huandoy, which became
Avalanche, devastating the town of Ancash, that was a
population of 1.500 inhabitants located to four kilometers
to the north of the present city of Yungay. That day the
Epifanía of the Gentleman and the birthday of the mayor of
the locality celebrated with great festejos, Don Melchor
Punyan, when to 2 afternoon a lagoon was overflowed glacier,
the one that with thousands of tons of mud and stones
devastated the town.
"10 of January of 1962: An avalanche to the 06:05
p.m. took place, by loosening of an enormous ice cornice
from the North tip of Monte Huascarán. The mass of ice
recorrio 16 km at the speed of 120 km per hour. They
disappeared 4.000 inhabitants and they were erased of the
map the towns of Ranrahirca, Shacsha, Huarascucho, Small
Yanama, Armapampa and Uchucoto. In that opportunity the
avalanche happened to two kilometers to the south of the old
city of Yungay.
"31 of May of 1970: To 3: 23 p.m. a violent
earthquake, shook Monte Huascarán, causing the loosening of
gigantic ice cornices that fell initially in angle of 70 to
80 degrees towards lagoons glaciers causing a alluvium of 50
to 100 million of m3 of morrénica mass what Yungainos caused
the death of 22.000, erasing of the map, the capital City of
Yungay, their districts and districts such as Ongo, Aira,
Armapampa, Shacsha, New Ranrahirca, Huarascucho, Chuquibamba,
Caya, Utcush and Tullpa. All the avalanche I travel
vertically through 16 km lowering between 3.000 to 4.100 mts
with a speed average of 280 km per hour.
That terrible day, Scientific Ing. Mateo Casaverde
accompanied by French geophysicist G. Patzelt and its wife
was in Yungay, describing the catastrophe as she follows:
We directed of Yungay to Caraz, when to the height of the
cemetery of Yungay beginning the earthquake. ... the
vertical component of the seismic waves could be warned with
much clarity, producing slightly cracks on the asphalt of
the highway... We practically left our vehicle when the
earthquake was finished. We listened to a LF noise,
something different, although not very different, of the
noise produced by an earthquake. The noise came from the
direction of the Huascarán and we observed between Yungay
and the snowed one, a giant dust cloud, almost color clay.
The alluvium had taken place; part of the North Huascarán
venia down. Hours were approximately the 15:24. In the
vicinity where we were, I complete place that offered a
relative security to us against the avalanche was the
cemetery, constructed on an artificial hill, a pre-incaica
huaca. We ran about 100 mts of highway before entering the
cemetery, that also had undergone the effects of the
earthquake. Already in this one, I hit upon to turn around
the Vista to Yungay. Then; a gigantic gray mud wave could be
observed clearly sure of about 60 meters of stop, that began
to break itself in crest and with slight inclination and was
going to strike the left flank of the city. This wave did
not have dust. In our race on the perrons, we managed to
reach the third terrace and we found the route to the third
terrace, more obstructed, and with a man, a woman and three
children treating to reach it. We turned aside ourselves to
the right, on the third terrace, when a dry blow of whip, a
portion of the avalanche I reach the cemetery in its frontal
part, practically at level of the third terrace. Mud
happened to about five meters of our feet. The sky by the
great amount of dust was darkened, possibly originated of
the destroyed houses of Yungay. We turned around the glance:
Yungay with its several thousands of inhabitants was
desappear.
Cesar Calvo (Poeta)
